Óscar Fuertes and Diego Vallejo complete Rally Dakar 2022

The Astara Team competes sustainably in its debut year

Mission accomplished. Óscar Fuertes and Diego Vallejo reached the finish line of the 2022 Dakar Rally, after fourteen days of competition and nearly 8,400 kilometers in total, 4,250 of which were raced against the clock through some of the most demanding, and at the same time fascinating, landscapes of the Arabian Peninsula. They did it onboard their 01 Concept, a prototype that has exhibited great reliability and has fulfilled its mission of competing against the best and doing so in a sustainable way.

Óscar Fuertes and Diego Vallejo climbed the ramp of the arrival podium of the Dakar Rally in Jeddah with emotion running high this afternoon. The satisfaction of being at the finish line of the toughest off-road car competition in the world was mixed with the fatigue accumulated over two intense weeks of competition and with the joy of being reunited at the end of the journey with the entire Astara Team. Once again they demonstrated that working as a team can overcome the most difficult challenges.

There were moments that even invited us to dream of a much better result than expected, when in the first week of competition they came to be the best classified Spaniards in the car category. And others where the Astara Team saw with their own eyes the other side of things, after being very close to retirement due to a rollover.

But the word surrender is not in the Astara Team dictionary. Not only did the race continue, but the 01 Concept was completely repaired and ready to face the last days of competition with the maximum guarantees. The organization had reserved some of the most complicated special stages for the second week, which was not an obstacle for Oscar Fuertes and Diego Vallejo to successfully overcome all of them.

Until today’s, the shortest of the entire rally, except for the prologue stage. Far from being a mere formality, its 164 kilometers against the clock contained many difficulties in terms of navigation, which, together with poor visibility due to some sandstorms, maintained the general level of demand of the race until the last kilometer. In the end, Fuertes-Vallejo achieved the 37th fastest time in the special, finishing the race in 34th position overall.

Óscar Fuertes summed up the feelings at the finish like this: “It’s a huge satisfaction to be at the finish line of a race as extreme as this Dakar. We came to compete with a newly created team, with new cars and without having competed last year, due to the pandemic. But thanks to all our sponsors and the enthusiasm and strength of the entire team, we arrived in Saudi Arabia wanting to have a good race. There have been moments of all kinds throughout these two weeks, but above all there has been a great unity in the team, where we have all rowed in the same direction. Our goal was to compete at a good level and show that motorsports can be done in a sustainable way. We leave knowing that we have done something positive for the environment thanks to the use of e-fuel and we will return with the aim of improving”.
